How to avoid coffee stains on teeth
Coffee can cause unsightly stains on your teeth. (coffee in coffee image by Maria Brzostowska from

If you've ever looked at a coffeemaker that hasn't been cleaned in a while, you know that coffee can stain quickly and thoroughly. People who regularly drink coffee, along with other dark liquids such as cola and red wine, often notice that their teeth begin to dull in colour. Once coffee stains set in, the only way to remove them, is through teeth whitening. The best and least expensive way to keep your teeth sparkling white is to prevent coffee stains before they start.

  1. 1

Use a straw in your coffee cup. You may not be able to drink the coffee piping hot this way, but the straw will help to prevent stains by directing the coffee beyond your teeth.

  2. 2

Rinse your mouth out with mouthwash after drinking coffee.

  3. 3

Chew sugarless gum after drinking coffee, if you cannot brush right away.

  4. 4

Eat a snack like an apple or a carrot that will help to clean teeth if you cannot brush right after drinking coffee.

  5. 5

Moderate the amount of coffee you drink. If you drink an excessive amount, you are more likely to accumulate stains on your teeth.
