How to Use a Trough Urinal

Updated February 21, 2017

Trough urinals can often be found in public places such as sports arenas and bars. The simple design of trough urinals reduces plumbing costs as they are the size of several standard urinals but typically use only a single drain pipe. While the trough urinal has its benefits, some males find them uncomfortable to use due to the lack of privacy. For trough urinals to be as comfortable as possible, use proper urinal etiquette.

Stand in front of the trough urinal. Keep in mind some people may be uncomfortable with closeness to others when using it, so keep your distance, if possible.

Urinate in the trough urinal as you would any other type of urinal.

Flush the trough urinal if you have the option to do so and you're in close proximity to the handle. Do not feel the need to flush if you have to get in another person's way to reach the handle.

Wash your hands with warm water and soap after using the trough urinal. This is especially important when using a trough urinal as urine is more likely to splash on your hands due to multiple people urinating beside you.

Conversations are usually kept to a minimum at urinals.
