Travertine is a type of limestone that is formed near natural hot springs. The gas bubbles from the hot springs are what gives travertine its textured, pitted look. Travertine comes in a variety of earth tone colours which makes it a popular choice in home decor. While travertine can be polished, tumbled travertine is the more natural looking textured tile. Tumbled travertine can be sealed to prevent stains and make the stone more durable.

Instructions

    Instructions

  1. 1

Use an alkaline cleaner to thoroughly clean your tumbled travertine surface. Use a cotton towel to dry the surface of the stone and allow the travertine to dry completely for 24--72 hours.

  2. 2

Apply the sealer directly to the lamb's wool applicator and rub the sealer evenly on to the travertine. Be sure to use slow even strokes to make sure the sealer covers the entire surface and penetrates the porous surface of the travertine.

  3. 3

Apply a second coat of sealer immediately after the first coat has been applied. Use the same application technique as in Step 2, but this time smooth out any streaks left behind by the sealer.

  4. 4

While the sealer is still damp, use a cotton towel to wipe up any excess sealer and polish out any streaks. Allow the sealer to dry completely.

Tips and warnings

  • Water-based sealers take longer to dry than oil-based sealers, so consider that when selecting the type of sealer to use.
