If you have owned a motor vehicle for more than a few years, then you may have already experienced the unpleasantness and inconvenience of your battery dying. When this happens, your vehicle will not start. You put the key in the ignition, turn it and nothing happens. You get the battery replaced or replace it yourself, depending on how handy you are, and then the old battery gets thrown away. However, you don't have to just throw it away. You can recycle your old car batteries for cash.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Contact your local metal recycler. This is often a branch of your local recycling centre. It may offer cash for your car battery.

  2. 2

Try other places if your local metal recycler does not offer cash. Some places you can try include auto parts stores and auto repair shops.

  3. 3

Search for other possible places using online resources if you have no luck. Websites like Earth 911 allow you to search for places near you that recycle car batteries. Sometimes, there are local places you wouldn't expect that recycle car batteries, such as a department store or home improvement store.

  4. 4

Contact each place you found to ask if it offers cash for old car batteries. Be sure to write down what each place offers so you can compare.

Tips and warnings

  • Know what to expect. Generally, you should expect just a few dollars for your old car battery. However, you may be able to find a recycler that will pay up to £3.
