TracFone is a prepaid Global Systems for Mobile Communications (GSM) cellular service provider that operates in the United States. One of the prepaid mobile phones offered by TracFone is the Motorola W260g. This basic, clamshell-style cell phone features a colour display, a speakerphone, messaging and four games. TracFone sells this phone with a carrier lock that prevents using this phone with another GSM cellular service provider. It is, however, possible to unlock this phone so that it will function with another cellular service provider's Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card.

Instructions

  1. 1

Call TracFone customer service at 800-867-7183 and request the unlock code for your Motorola W260g. TracFone will generally give you the unlock code free of charge if you have an active account that is in good standing. It is also possible to purchase the unlock code from a company that sells unlock codes. Write down the unlock code.

  2. 2

Purchase a SIM card from another GSM cellular service provider.

  3. 3

Remove the back cover and the battery from the Motorola W260g. Take the existing SIM card out of the phone and replace it with the SIM card purchased in Step 2. Replace the battery and back cover and power on the phone.

  4. 4

Enter the unlock code you wrote down in Step 2. Your Motorola W260g is now unlocked and will work with your new SIM card.

Tips and warnings

  • If you receive an error code after entering the unlock code, wait for approximately two hours and repeat this process. Too many unsuccessful unlock code attempts will result in a temporarily disabled phone.
