A RAR file, like the more common ZIP file extension, is a compressed archive. RAR folders shrink multiple files into a smaller, more portable single file for transportation and distribution. To view and use the contents of a RAR file, you need a compression utility compatible with the format. These utilities can uncompress multiple RAR files and then combine them into one archive file. While many utilities can uncompress a RAR file, very few can create them. If you need to combine multiple files back into the RAR format, use WinRAR. If you don't mind combining the RAR files into a single ZIP, TAR or 7Z archive file, use 7-Zip.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

  1. 1

Download a WinRAR graphical user interface installation file from the RarLab website. WinRAR is a commercial program, but the website provides a free trial version.

  2. 2

Open WinRAR and navigate its main panel to one of the RAR files you wish to combine. Press the "Extract To" button.

  3. 3

Press the "New Folder" button. Give the folder a name and press "OK" to extract the files.

  4. 4

Repeat the above steps to extract the other RAR files. Set the newly created folder as the extraction point for each of these files.

  5. 5

Click the "Add" button and select the files in the newly created folder. Press "OK."

  6. 6

Select an archive location from the drop-down menu. Press the "RAR" radio button and select "OK" to create the combined RAR file.

  1. 1

Download the 7-Zip installation file from the 7-Zip website and place the program on your computer. 7-Zip is a free program, and offers different install files for Windows, OSX, Linux and other operating systems.

  2. 2

Place each RAR file you wish to combine into the same directory. Depending on the number of items archived in each file, placing them in a new folder with no other files may help organise the process.

  3. 3

Click and drag to highlight the RAR files. Right click on a file, highlight "7-Zip" and select "Extract Here." Wait for the extraction to finish.

  4. 4

Hold the "Ctl" key ("Command" key in OSX) and click on each extracted item until they are all selected. Right click on a file, highlight "7-Zip" and select an "Add to" option, depending on which type of archive file you wish to create. Wait for compression to finish. The new combined file will appear in the directory.
