Skype is a free Voice Over IP (VoIP) program that is used to make calls to Skype users, landline telephones and mobile devices worldwide. The software can be used in conjunction with your Web browser to provide a simple way to call phone numbers found on the Web. If you are programming a website, you can use the Skype HTML code to make phone numbers launch the Skype application and dial the number when a user clicks on the phone number.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Launch your HTML-editing application and open the website file you wish to edit.

  2. 2

Type the HTML code "<a href="callto://+[COUNTRY CODE][AREA CODE][PHONE NUMBER]">[PHONE NUMBER TEXT]</a>" to link a landline or mobile phone number on your website. Clicking this link will launch Skype to dial the phone number. Be sure to replace the bracketed text with the required information. For example, if the phone number was "555-555-5555" in the United States, the code would be "<a href="callto://+15555555555">Call me at 555-555-5555 on Skype</a>."

  3. 3

Type the HTML code "<a href="skype:[SKYPE USER NAME]?call">[SKYPE USER NAME TEXT]</a>" to link a Skype user name on your website. For example, if the Skype user name was "eHow," the code would be "<a href="skype:ehow?call">Call eHow on Skype</a>."

  4. 4

Save your changes and upload the file to the Internet. If the user has Skype installed on her computer, the program will launch when clicking either of these two links.
