How to Change Transmission Fluid in a Manual Ford Ranger

Changing the manual transmission fluid may be one of the most overlooked preventive maintenance projects in your Ford Ranger. Unlike automatic Rangers, the manual transmission trucks do not exhibit noticeable signs of low fluid, such as slipping and shuddering. Unfortunately, manual transmissions often show signs of low fluid too late to prevent severe damage. Checking and replacing the manual transmission fluid in your truck will help extend the life of the transmission.

Place wheel chocks behind the passenger-side wheels and set the parking brake. Raise and support the driver side of the truck using a floor jack and jack stands. Position the jack stands under the frame when the floor jack has raised the truck high enough for you to work comfortably under it. Lower the truck onto the stands for added safety.

Position the drain pan under the transmission. Remove the transmission drain plug, located on the driver side of the transmission near the middle of the transmission, using a 15/16-inch wrench. Allow the fluid to drain into the drain pan until it has slowed to a drip. Reinstall the drain plug, and tighten it securely.

Remove the filler plug from the driver side of the transmission, located just above the drain plug and slightly toward the front of the truck, using a 15/16-inch wrench. Insert the transfer pump into a bottle of transmission fluid, and pump the fluid into the fill plug hole. Continue adding fluid to the transmission until fluid starts to run out of the fill plug hole.

Reinstall the fill plug, and tighten it securely. Remove the drain pan from under the Ranger. Raise the truck off the jack stands, and remove the stands. Lower the floor jack, and slide it out from under the Ford. Test drive the truck, then check for leaks.

Failure to support the vehicle weight with jack stands while working under it can result in vehicle damage and severe injury.
