LG's GSA-E40L Super Multi DVD Rewriter is an external DVD reader and writer capable of connecting via USB to PC and Mac computers to add DVD functionality. The drive is compatible with all formats of writable and rewritable DVDs, and can write discs at up to 18x speed. As with any electronic device, the GSA-E40L is not immune to hardware errors, but there are a series of troubleshooting steps that can be taken to combat these.

Things you need
- CD cleaning cloth
- Disc-cleaning solution
- DVD lens-cleaning disc
Disconnect the drive from your computer's USB port. Check both ends of the USB cable to ensure no dirt or foreign bodies are blocking the connection. Reconnect the drive directly to a USB port on your computer tower itself, not a relay port on the screen, keyboard or hub.
Clean the disc to be read, copied or written with a lint-free cleaning cloth such as that used for discs or glasses, moistened with CD cleaning solution, rubbing alcohol or glass cleaner.
Insert a DVD lens-cleaning disc into the drive and press "Play" on your computer's media playing software. Do not use a CD-cleaning disc as these can damage the DVD lens.
Open your disc-writing software and open the "Burn Options" section. Reduce "Write Speed" to 4x or lower for burning or copying DVD movies, or 2x for copying software. Higher burn speeds increase the risk of corrupt data being written to the disc.
Go to the site in Resources and download the latest firmware for the drive. Double-click the downloaded file to unzip, then open the unzipped "EXE" file to update your drive to the latest firmware, which will increase performance and compatibility with your computer.
Contact LG if the above steps do not fix your issue. Your drive may be damaged or faulty, requiring service or replacement.
