The Epson Stylus Pro 4800 is a desktop printer that uses eight 110ml or 220ml print heads of black and coloured ink to produce photo-quality, high-resolution images. When a print head runs out of ink, replacing it is a simple task, unless the one you're replacing is black. The coloured print heads only require removal and replacement, but the black cartridge needs more attention. You must remove all the print heads in the left compartment and perform repetitive commands issued by the control panel screen to complete the job.

How to Replace a Colored Print Head

  1. 1

Turn on the printer and check the control panel for a steady or flashing red light, which indicates that a print head is almost empty or completely out of ink. The control panel screen will tell you which print head needs replacement.

  2. 2

Press in on the top of the print head compartment cover on the side of the printer where the print head is located. The compartment cover will pop open, exposing the print heads.

  3. 3

Flip up the print head release switch on the right side of the print head compartment.

  4. 4

    Slide out the print head.

  5. 5

Unwrap the replacement print head and remove the protective tape. Shake the print head to distribute the ink.

  6. 6

Slide the print head into the empty retainer in the direction of the arrow on top of the print head.

  7. 7

Flip down the print head release switch and close the print head compartment door. The control panel screen will indicate that the printer is ready once you close the compartment door.

Tips and warnings

  • If you purchase 220mL print heads, you can't close the print head compartment cover once they're installed. These print heads work perfectly, and they're ideal, because there's more ink inside, but they're so large that they extend out of the compartment.
