How to Transfer Movies to an Xbox 360 Hard Drive

Updated July 19, 2017

The easiest way to transfer movies to the Xbox 360 hard drive is via USB flash drive. The Xbox 360 can play video directly off of the USB flash drive or copy the video file from the flash drive to the hard drive. Once the movie is transferred, you can use the onscreen Xbox 360 media player controls to manipulate (e.g. play/pause) the video. Supported video formats include AVI, DIVX, WMV and MP4.

Turn off the Xbox 360. Attach the hard drive to the hard drive bay on the left side of the console. Insert the USB flash drive with the video you want to transfer into any USB port on the Xbox.

Turn on the Xbox. Select the "My Xbox" menu. Select "System Settings" and "Memory." A list of connected storage devices will be displayed.

Select "USB Flash Drive." Select "Videos." Select the movie file that you want to transfer to the Xbox 360 hard drive. Select "Copy." You will be asked to select the storage device to which you want to copy the movie. Select "Hard Drive."
