An unlocked Sony Ericsson K850i will allow you to use other network providers without having to buy a new phone. Also, if you ever leave the country on a vacation or for work purposes, you can avoid expensive overseas roaming rates by using a prepaid SIM card from any local network. In short, unlocking your K850i adds to its value.

Instructions

  1. 1

Find the international mobile equipment identity (IMEI) number of your Sony Ericsson K850i. Pull out the phone battery to see a sticker containing the IMEI number.

  2. 2

Purchase the unlock code from a website such as Unlock All Cellular, Unlocking or GSM Liberty. These websites will let you buy the code for about £5.10 to £22.70 as of 2010, depending on the network to which the handset is locked. When you provide the website with your K850i's serial number, the website will generate an unlock code for the phone and send it to you via e-mail.

  3. 3

Power off the phone and replace the existing SIM card with one from a different network provider.

  4. 4

Press the "Left" arrow key of the phone followed by the "*" key two times.

  5. 5

Press the "Left" arrow key again. Your K850i will show you either of these messages, "Personalized with MNC2" or "Personalized with MNC3."

  6. 6

Wait for about four seconds until you see "Network" on the screen with a picture of a closed padlock.

  7. 7

Press the "Select" button. The phone screen will now read, "Unlock (Net) 5" and "NCK:".

  8. 8

Enter the unlock code purchased from the website. You will now see the message, "Network unlocked" followed by "Insert SIM." Your SE K850i will be unlocked.
