How to Sync an Audio File to a PowerPoint Presentation
PoewrPoint makes it possible to sync audio from CDs to your presentation. (compact disc banner header image by Gary Walker from Fotolia.com)

Using Microsoft PowerPoint, you can use sound files to enhance your slideshow presentations. You can include full-length songs to play throughout your presentation, as well as individual sound clips for each slide. You can make sound bytes loop or play only once and you can choose when to make a sound begin or end in all versions of PowerPoint. You can also choose to delete sound bytes that you no longer want to include with your presentation.

Instructions

  1. 1

Click on your desired slide and then select "Insert" from the top of the PowerPoint screen. Select the "Media Clips" option, then select "Sound." Select "Sound from File" and locate your sound file or files on your hard drive--if you are using an actual song--and select "OK." For sound clips, select "Sound from Clip Organizer" instead of "Sound from File." Click the clip to add it to the slide.

  2. 2

Select "Automatically" or "When Clicked" from the pop-up dialogue box that appears after you select a sound file. "Automatically" will make the sound play as soon as the clips opens, while "When Clicked" will make the sound start only when you click on the screen.

  3. 3

Loop sounds, if desired, by clicking on the "Sound" icon on your slide. Go to the PowerPoint menu at the top of the screen. The "Sound Options" pane should include an option titled "Loop Until Stopped." Check the box next to this option to loop your music.

  4. 4

Click "Animations" at the top of the screen and select the "Custom Animation" option. A pane should open on the right side of your screen. Click on the desired sound from the list to highlight it and then click the arrow to the right of the name. Select "Effect Options" from the drop-down menu that appears.

  5. 5

Select options under "Start playing" and "Stop playing" under the "Effect" tab that appears to select when you want the song to start playing or to end. Click "On click" under "Stop playing" to make a sound end with the mouse click. Select "OK" when you are satisfied with the options.

Tips and warnings

  • Play music from a CD with your PowerPoint presentation by selecting "Insert" and then "Media Clips." Click "Sound" and select "Play CD Audio Track." If you choose this option, follow this guide from Step Two to the end to create settings for your CD tracks.
