Portable Document Formats (PDFs), developed by Adobe, and are widely used online because Adobe's free reader program lets anyone open and print a PDF from a personal computer. While PDF files usually cannot be altered, a static form can become fillable. This means fields can be designed into the PDF for end users to add information such as name, address, phone number or comments. Fillable PDFs are created and edited in Adobe Acrobat.

    Open Adobe Acrobat, then open the fillable PDF file you want to edit. To do this, click "open" and look for the file name of the document you want to edit, then click on the file name to open the document.

    Click on the "library" tab, then click on "standard" to add or update existing fields within the fillable PDF document. Select a text field, password field, numeric field, check box, drop-down list, radio button or list box to add to the form. When you select a field, you also can choose a name and design how it looks in Acrobat's "layout" tab, viewable from the top menu.

    Change, delete or add text when filling out the fillable PDF. You can also perform calculations and other actions using the "accessibility" tab, which is located within the "layout" tab, viewable from Acrobat's top menu bar.
