How to Activate Transition Lenses

Updated April 17, 2017

Transition lenses were created to solve the problem faced by many people who wear glasses: what do you do when you go out in the sun? The sun's harmful UV rays can lead to cataracts, skin cancer around the eye and other eye problems if the eyes are left unprotected, according the Environmental Protection Agency. Transition lenses contain light-sensitive dye, which darkens as the lenses are exposed to sunlight. As the light levels change, the lenses change shade accordingly.

Put on your glasses with the transition lenses, while inside.

Go outside and step into the sunlight.

Wait for about one minute for the lenses to fully darken.

Walk around and watch how the lenses activate to change shades, adjusting to the amount of light you encounter while wearing them.
