How to Connect a Sony TV to the Internet

Updated April 17, 2017

If you spend more time on the Internet than you do watching your Sony TV, consider connecting your TV to your computer to get the most out of both the Internet and your TV. Not only is connecting your Sony TV to your computer a big upgrade in monitor size, it is also a big upgrade in function because it allows you to control your computer's sound with your TV's remote control.

Turn both the TV and computer around so the HDMI ports are both easy to see and access.

Plug the HDMI cable into the HDMI port of the TV. Plug the other end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI port in the back of the computer. HDMI cables transfer both video and sound through a single cable so the sound of the computer plays on your TV's speakers.

Press the HDMI button on your remote control. This will change the input signal from the TV to play from the HDDMI connection. You can switch from browsing the Internet to watching TV by pressing the TV button, and switch back to the Internet by pressing the HDMI button.

If the TV does not automatically display the image from the computer screen, connect a computer monitor to the computer.

Right-click an empty area on the desktop and select "Graphics Options." Then on the next menu select "Output to." Another menu will appear with two "Monitor" options. Select the "Monitor" option without the check next to it. This will display the image from the computer on the TV.

Disconnect the computer monitor.

Navigate your computer to get online as you usually do, using the TV as a monitor.
