How to ship a wedding cake
Shipping weddnig cakes is possible, but must be done carefully. (unique wedding cake image by Paul Retherford from

Wedding cake sales do not have to be dictated by geography. Shipping wedding cakes can increase your business and boost your reputation. As brides hunt for the best cakes for their weddings, they want as many options as possible. Providing customers with the option to ship a wedding cake is a service that could make your business stand out from the rest. Keep in mind that unless you are willing to hand carry the cake, butter cream cakes are not suitable for shipping---only rolled fondant cakes will survive packing and transportation.

  1. 1

Freeze the cake. Freezing preserves freshness and keeps the fondant firm and undamaged.

  2. 2

Place the wedding cake into an insulated container. FedEx recommends containers made of expanded polystyrene foam or rigid, high-density polyurethane.

  3. 3

Add soft cushioning around the wedding cake. Packing peanuts or small inflatable airbags will hold the cake in place without damaging it. Make sure there is enough cushioning to prevent the cake from moving. Place frozen gel packs in with the cushioning to keep the cake cool.

  4. 4

Pack a wedding cake repair kit and place it in the container. The kit should contain extra fondant, decorating bag and tips so repairs can be made if the cake is damaged during shipping.

  5. 5

Place the insulated container containing the wedding cake inside of a sturdy box. Fill the box with cushioning to immobilise the container.

  6. 6

Seal the box. The United States Postal Service recommends sealing the box and all seams with two-inch wide tape.

  7. 7

Mark the box 'perishable' and 'fragile.' Write 'this end up' on the top of the box.

  8. 8

Ship using overnight or next day service. The wedding cake will thaw and be vulnerable to damage the longer it is in transit. Be sure to get a tracking label from the shipper.

  9. 9

Track the package online to keep tabs on the wedding cake's location and when it will arrive at its destination.

Tips and warnings

  • If the customer is willing to do some cake assembly, ship the tiers separately.
  • Decorations can be shipped separately and added after arrival.
