“The Wizard of Oz” is one of the most beloved and recognisable family films of all time. Whether you are celebrating the birthday of an infant or senior citizen, whether it’s a baby shower or retirement party, planning it with theme decorations revolving around the characters and settings of this movie is an excellent choice. The vibrant colours and interesting props are exciting, yet the entire atmosphere lends a touch of nostalgic charm.

  1. 1

Paint an approximately 3-foot-wide strip of yellow going up the path to your door using yellow washable sidewalk paint. Allow it to set.

  2. 2

Lay a yardstick across the yellow path at one end, approximately 8 inches from the edge of the path. Draw a stripe of white, horizontally, across the path. Move the yardstick 8 inches forward and make another stripe. Continue this up the path.

  3. 3

Draw short vertical stripes between the horizontal stripes, using a small ruler to make the lines straight. Space these vertical stripes about 10 to 12 inches apart, and stagger them as you go up each level to give them the appearance of bricks.

  4. 4

Hang a sign at the front of the walk that says, “Follow the yellow brick road.”

  1. 1

Place a small, woven picnic basket with a handle on a table. If it has a cover, leave the cover open.

  2. 2

Arrange some silk sunflowers in the basket lying casually on their side, some of them hanging up and over the edge.

  3. 3

Place a small, black stuffed dog into the basket with his front legs hanging over the edge.

  4. 4

Set an oil can and two apples in the centre, on top of the flower arrangement. Place the centrepiece on your table. Make it look even better by draping the table in a blue and white checkered cloth reminiscent of Dorothy’s dress.

  1. 1

Lay a piece of poster board on a table. Trace a large circle on it using your biggest serving tray, a hula hoop or garbage pail cover. Cut it out.

  2. 2

Paint the circle whatever colour you desire, and paint your party message on it, such as, “Happy Birthday.” Allow the paint to dry and cut out the circle.

  3. 3

Attach three pieces of yarn to the back of the circle with tape. Put one on each side and one in the centre. The yarn should hang down below the circle.

  4. 4

Cut a square shape out of brown paper to be the basket of the balloon. Tape the other ends of the yarn to the back of the basket.

  5. 5

Cut out small images of the movie characters, if desired, and glue them to the back of the basket, facing forward. When you hang the balloon on the wall and see the basket from the front, it should look like they are standing in the basket and sticking out of the top.
