Opening the Western Digital My Passport drive is much like opening any other small laptop-sized external hard drive enclosure. However, the Western Digital My Passport has many interior plastic pins that hold the enclosure tightly together, which also makes the plastic case stick tightly together. Loosening each of the plastic pins in the seams is the key to opening the case without breaking the plastic enclosure.

- Set of precision screwdrivers
Disconnect the Western Digital My Passport drive from the computer and the power outlet. Remove any cables that go to the external drive.
Insert a flat blade precision screwdriver, a rigid credit card or any other flat tool that can pry the plastic edges of the case open. Gently insert the tool in the plastic seams of the case and slowly pry open the side. Expect to feel resistance because there are many notches. Slowly work your way around the sides of the plastic case until all the interior plastic clips unlock.
Remove the hard drive from the caddie by removing the retaining plastic pins with your fingernail or the edge of a precision flathead screwdriver. Gently lift out the hard drive by pulling on the top or bottom corners until it lifts out. Remove the hard drive pin adaptor. Pull it evenly straight off to avoid bending the pins.
