The Brother HL-4040 toner cartridge is used in a variety of Brother laser printer models. When the toner cartridge runs low on toner, it can be refilled rather than replacing the entire cartridge. When the cartridge is refilled, the reset spring must be correctly positioned so the printer will treat the cartridge as new. If the reset spring is not set correctly, the printer will detect the toner cartridge as empty and will produce an error, preventing the toner from being used.

  1. 1

Rotate the toner cartridge so the end with the gears is facing you.

  2. 2

Locate the reset spring on the larger end of the gear assembly. The reset spring is long and has an S-shaped arm.

  3. 3

Position the tail of the spring into the notch at the base of the gear closest to the end of the gear assembly.

  4. 4

Position the arm of the spring so the elbow of the spring closest to the end of the arm rests between the two notches in the large gear that are closest to each other.

  5. 5

Replace the toner cartridge in the printer. If the printer does not treat it as a new cartridge, remove it and reset the spring again.
