How to Repair PDF Files for Free

Many programs are able to create a PDF file from a text document. When a particular PDF file cannot be viewed properly, however, you will need to repair the file. Repairing a PDF file can be done free by first verifying that you have the Adobe Reader program installed on your system. Then your Web browser will need to be configured in the program to view the file online. You may also need to repair the Acrobat Reader program.

    Double-click the "Adobe Acrobat Reader" icon that is on your desktop.

    Select the "Edit" drop-down menu and click the “Preferences” option.

    Select “Internet” from the list, under Categories, on the left panel.

    Uncheck the box for “Display PDF in Browser.” Click the “OK” button to save the change.

    Select the "File" drop-down menu and click “Exit” to close the program.

    Click the "Start" button and then select the “Run” option. Type “appwiz.cpl” and then press the “Enter” key or click the “OK” button. Wait for the Programs list to be displayed.

    Select “Adobe Reader” from the list and then click the “Change” button. This will display the Setup dialogue box.

    Click the “Next” button to continue. Select the option for “Repair” and then click the “Next” button to continue.

    Click the “Update” button and then wait for the process to finish. Click the “Finish” button to complete the repair.

Tips and warnings

  • Uninstall the Adobe Reader and then reinstall the program to fix any corrupt files on your system.
