How to lighten hair with peroxide & lemon juice

Updated November 21, 2016

There are a couple of ways to lighten the colour of your hair without using hair dye. Lemon juice and hydrogen peroxide are two products that can lighten hair. These colouring methods work best with dirty blond or light brown hair. Since lemon juice and hydrogen peroxide can dry out the hair, it's important to use a deep conditioning treatment at night.

Pour 1 qt. water into a spray bottle.

Squeeze the juice from 2 lemons into the water bottle.

Close the bottle, and shake it up.

Spray the mixture onto your hair. Make sure your hair is soaked before you stop spraying.

Go out into the sunlight immediately, and let your hair dry out there. The sunlight helps to activate the effects of the lemon juice.

Pour the contents of a bottle of 3 per cent hydrogen peroxide into a spray bottle.

Spray the peroxide onto your hair until it is damp.

Run a comb through your hair to make sure the peroxide is spread through your hair.

Shampoo your hair if you can't stand the smell of the peroxide. If you don't mind it, sit out in the sun until your hair dries to further speed the lightening effect of the peroxide.
