How to Lighten & Condition Hair With Lemon Juice

Whether you want to lighten your hair or condition it so that it looks and feels healthier, you can do so naturally with a sour little fruit. Sitting in the sun will lighten your hair, but using lemon juice will speed up the process and lighten your hair with natural-looking highlights. Lemon juice contains enzymes that will also put your hair in better condition, if you use it in a simple, all-natural conditioning recipe. Concentrated lemon juice is both cheap and easy to find.

Measure 2 cups of lemon juice concentrate and mix in 1 cup of distilled water. Pour the mixture into a clean plastic spray bottle and make sure the tip of the nozzle is on the mist setting.

Spray your hair with the mixture in the area where you want to lighten, or over your whole head. You don't need to soak your hair until it's dripping wet, just wet enough so that you know you've got the lemon juice mixture through. Do this when your hair is dirty, oily, and needs to be washed. The lemon juice will dry out your hair, so you need your natural oils to protect it during the lightening process.

Sit outside or by a sunny window so that your hair is getting direct sunlight. Set a timer or look at your watch and wait for 25 to 30 minutes. When the time is up, wash your hair and condition it as usual. If your hair is blond or light brown, you will see a significant change in the lightness, with lighter highlights. If you have medium to dark brown hair, you will see slightly lighter, reddish highlights. Repeat this process several more times to lighten your hair even more.

Measure 3/4 cup of olive oil in a glass measuring cup or in a bowl. Mix in 3 tbsp of lemon juice concentrate and 1/2 cup of honey. Lemon juice has a drying property but it contains large amounts of Vitamin C, which will revive your hair if it is dull and make it smooth and shiny. The olive oil and honey will protect your hair from the dryness of the lemon juice and help to condition your hair.

Wash your hair as you normally would. Apply the lemon juice conditioning mixture on your hair and use a wide-tooth comb to spread it through evenly.

Put a shower cap on your head or wrap plastic around your hair to keep it moist. Set a timer for 30 minutes and rinse the mixture out of your hair with cool water when the time is up. Your hair will be softer and shinier than before.
