VAIO is a sub-brand for Sony computer products; Sony VAIO computers run on Windows operating systems. When Windows products have problems, one method of troubleshooting is to format the hard drive and reinstall Windows.

Instructions

    Insert the USB flash drive into a free USB port on your computer.

    Copy all your personal files and folders to the USB flash drive.

    Remove the USB flash drive, insert the system recovery disc, click "Start" and select "Shut Down."

    Start up your computer and press any key to command your computer to boot from the CD drive.

    Choose your language settings, select "Custom" from the choice of installation types and click "Next."

    Click "Drive Options" and select the drives you wish to format, then click "Format." If you have unwanted partitions, select each one and press "Delete."

    Click "Next" once the formatting process has finished and follow the on-screen instructions.

    Insert the USB flash drive and restore your personal files and folders.
