If the "Windows XP" watermark appears on your computer's desktop no matter which wallpaper image you select, this is an indication that your copy of Windows XP has not yet been activated. Once you install an unactivated copy of the operating system, you have 30 days to perform an activation before you won't be able to use your computer any longer. Activating Windows XP and getting rid of the irritating watermark can be done using a native Windows utility.

Click "Start" in the lower-left corner of your Windows XP desktop. Find and click the "Programs" selection menu. Click "Accessories" and then "System Tools."
Click "Activate Windows." This will open the utility necessary to begin your activation of Windows XP.
Select your method for activation. If your computer is connected to the Internet, you can select "Activate Windows over the Internet." If your computer is not connected to the Internet, select "Activate Windows over the Phone." If you choose to activate over the phone, you will be given a number to call. Give the person who answers your Windows XP keycode (located on the CD-ROM that you used to install Windows) and they will give you instructions on what to do next. If you activate over the Internet, type your Windows XP keycode into the prompt. Windows XP will now be activated and the watermark on your desktop will be removed.
