Making a fanciful birthday cake does not require a speciality baking pan. Create your own butterfly-shaped birthday cake from round baking pans and a box of cake mix or your favourite cake recipe. Decorating the butterfly cake to match the birthday honoree's favourite colours can customise this dessert treat.

- 9-inch round cake pan
- Cooking spray
- Prepared cake mix to make 9-inch round cake (4 to 5 cups)
- 20-inch square cake board covered in foil
- Bread knife
- 6-inch long snack cake or eclair (such as Twinkie)
- 2 cups cake frosting
- Candy (optional)
Preheat the oven to 176 degrees C and spray the inside of the cake pan with cooking spray.
Lightly dust the inside of the cake pan with flour and turn the pan upside down to pour out excess flour.
Fill the pan halfway to two-thirds full with the prepared cake mix.
Bake the cake for 30 to 35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean when inserted into the middle of the cake.
Remove the cake from the oven and set the pan on a wire rack for 10 minutes.
Turn the cake pan upside down over the wire rack to remove the cake from the pan, and allow it to cool completely on the wire rack.
Transfer the cooled cake to the foil-covered cake board.
Cut the cake in half with a bread knife and place the two halves of the cake so their flat sides face away from each other.
Move the two cake halves apart enough to place the snack cake lengthwise between the rounded edges of the cake to make the body of the butterfly.
Spread cake frosting over both of the semicircle cake parts and the snack cake.
Arrange candy over the cake semicircles which are the "wings" of the butterfly, if desired.
