Calibrating a laptop battery can increase or restore its efficiency. This should be done prior to first use, and again when you notice battery efficiency decreasing. Calibrating a battery experiencing decreased efficiency is most effective on nickel-cadmium (NiCad) and nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries. You can still calibrate a lithium ion (Li-ion) battery, though the process is a bit different. Calibrating involves draining and recharging the battery. This process is also referred to as conditioning.
Remove the AC adaptor from your laptop by gently pulling it out.
Power on your laptop. Allow it to run on battery power until the battery is drained and the laptop shuts down.
Plug the AC adaptor into an electrical socket. Insert the appropriate end into the your laptop.
Leave the AC adaptor plugged into the laptop for eight hours to fully charge the battery. Do not use the laptop during this time.
Remove the AC adaptor, turn the laptop on and allow the computer to run on battery power until the battery is drained. Repeat this process until the battery has been drained and recharged 3 to 5 times.
Remove the AC adaptor from the laptop.
Turn on the laptop. Allow it to run on battery power until the battery is drained to 40 per cent of capacity. Hover your mouse over the battery icon in the lower right corner of your toolbar. This will display how much life the battery still possesses.
Remove the battery from the laptop. The battery is located on the underside of your computer. Slide the locking mechanism to the side to unlock or release the battery. Once released, the battery will either slide out or can be lifted out of the bay. Store the battery until you are ready to use it.
Place the battery back into the battery bay when you are ready to use it.
Plug the AC adaptor into the side of the laptop. Allow the adaptor to fully charge the battery prior to use.
