Most modern operating systems, such as Windows 7 and Windows Vista, include a weather applet for the desktop sidebar. If you want something more robust, you always have the option to download free desktop software from a variety of application developers. Software is available that can either be placed on the desktop or in the system tray to notify you of weekly weather forecast or warn you of storms and dangerous weather conditions.

    Click the Start button and click "Control Panel."

    Click "Programs" and then click "Desktop Gadgets."

    Locate and select Weather in the list and double-click it.

    Open your web browser and go to Weather.com.

    Under Mobile & Downloads in the upper right corner of the page, click "Desktop Weather."

    Click "Free Download Now" and choose to save the file to your computer.

    Double-click the downloaded file to start the installation process.

    Click the "I Accept" button to accept the terms. Click "Decline" for all of the additional software that you don't need. Make sure to uncheck the "Download Weather.com Toolbar!" checkbox when you give your year of birth, gender and location.

    Go to weather.weatherbug.com.

    Click "Download" under the Weather on your Desktop box in the upper right.

    Click "Free PC Download" or click the Mac link if you have a Mac. Choose to save the file to your computer.

    Double-click the downloaded file to start the installation process.

    Click "I accept the License Terms and Privacy Policy" and click "Next." Uncheck the Ask toolbar options and click "Next." Click the shortcut checkboxes when you decide what shortcuts you want and click "Next." Click "Finish" after the application installs.
