Upholstery buttons are decorative accents for pillows and seat pads. Make these buttons by covering a button form with the same fabric as the cushion. If you are replacing an upholstery button, look for a coordinating or contrasting fabric. Once you've made the button, attaching it to the pillow or seat cover requires no special sewing skills.
- Skill level:
Things you need
- Two button forms
- 1/2 yard fabric
- Pillow or seat cover
- Upholstery needle
Cut the button fabric to a size recommended by the button cover manufacturer.
Press the fabric edges into the inside back of the cover.
Press the shank portion of the button cover backing into the inside back until you hear a click, which means the fabric is held in place securely.
Repeat all steps for a second button.
Thread the upholstery needle with 24 inches of thread.
Attach the buttons to the front and back of the pillow or seat cover by sewing through the pillow and connecting both button shanks.
Continue sewing back and forth through the pillow, connecting the button shanks 10 times, and knot the thread securely. Cut off the thread tail.
