Braces are placed over teeth to help straighten and position the them. Wearing braces for a prolonged period of time helps straighten teeth and correct overbites, underbites, crossbites or widely spaced teeth. While wearing braces, you may notice build-up from food, tartar and plaque forming on or around the braces, as well as slight discolouration of the braces, most noticeable with ceramic braces. Dentists and orthodontists clean the build-up and discolouration in their office during your routine visits; however, if you wish to clean or remove the stains and build-up at home, you can use lemon.

Squeeze the juice from half of a lemon into a cup. Alternatively, you can use 1 1/2 tbsp of bottled lemon juice. Add a quarter cup of room temperature water. Add 1 tsp of baking soda.

Pour the liquid into your mouth. Do not swallow it. Swoosh it around in your mouth for 60 seconds.

Spit the mixture out into the sink. Brush your teeth afterward. Use the mouthwash daily to help remove stains and build-up from braces.

Mix 1 tbsp baking soda with 1 tbsp fresh-squeezed or bottled lemon juice. Stir the mixture until it has a toothpaste-like consistency. If the consistency is too thin, add more baking soda. If it is too thick, add more lemon juice.

Add 1/8 tsp table salt to the mixture. The salt acts as an abrasive to help remove the stains and build-up. Mix the salt into the paste.

Add the paste to a toothbrush. Brush your teeth the same way you normally would. Use the mixture as needed to remove stains and build-up.
