How to order a Dell recovery CD

A Dell recovery CD contains the media necessary to return your computer to its original factory condition. A recovery CD is useful if you need to reformat your hard drive and reinstall the operating system. Most Dell systems come with a recovery CD included. You can also create your own recovery CD during the initial set-up of a new computer. If you have lost the recovery CD or it is damaged, you can order a new CD from Dell.

    Online request form

    Locate the service tag for your Dell computer. The service tag is affixed to your computer on a white label. The service tag is a five to seven-digit alphanumeric code. The service tag provides Dell with information about your system.

    Access the request form for recovery discs. The request form is available on Dell's website in the Support section.

    Fill out the request form. Provide your home address and service tag information to request a recovery disc. If you used a different address when you originally bought your system, provide that address.

    Submit the request form. Submitting the request form sends it to Dell support for processing. If additional information is needed, a Dell support technician may contact you.

    Web chat support

    Access Dell's chat-based web support. The chat application on Dell's website connects you with a support technician who can process your request for a recovery disc.

    Enter your information and service tag in the request to chat. Provide your e-mail address, phone number and name, as well. You will be placed in a chat with a support technician after submitting the requested information.

    Request the recovery disc. The support technician can process your request for a recovery disc and provide you with a confirmation number for the order.

    Exit the chat. Selecting “Exit” ends the chat and automatically generates a transcript of the chat, which is emailed to you.

    Locate the service tag for your Dell computer. The Dell support technician needs the service tag to determine the correct disc to send to you.

    Call Dell's technical support line. A support technician can be reached at 0844 444 4712 in the UK, Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm.

    Request a recovery disc for your Dell computer. Provide the technician with your service tag and shipping information.

  • If your system is out of warranty, you may be required to pay a fee for a recovery disc.
  • The support technician may want to troubleshoot your system before ordering the recovery disc.
