How to Replace the Serpentine Belt Pulley on a Honda CR-V

The engine on the Honda CR-V model vehicles come equipped with a serpentine belt. The serpentine belt is controlled by an automatic tensioner. The automatic tensioner has a spring-loaded arm on one end and a pulley on the other end. The pulley is what keeps the tension on the serpentine belt. The serpentine belt travels under the automatic tensioner pulley and around the other accessory pulleys. If the pulley that is connected to the automatic tensioner locks up or stops turning, replace the pulley immediately.

Park the Honda CR-V in a safe working area. Raise the bonnet.

Locate the automatic tensioner below the alternator. The automatic tensioner has a pulley on one end that the serpentine belt is travelling under. There is a bolt head in the centre of the pulley.

Turn the pulley counter clockwise with the 1/2-inch drive breaker bar and a socket to loosen the tension from the belt. Then, slide the belt off the automatic tensioner pulley.

Continue to turn the bolt head in the centre of the automatic tensioner pulley counter clockwise until the bolt loosens. Then, release the automatic tensioner and finish unscrewing the bolt with your fingers.

Pull the pulley off the automatic tensioner and push the new pulley in place. Screw the bolt back into the centre of the pulley and tighten the bolt down tight with the breaker bar and socket. Once the bolt is very tight, turn the pulley counterclockwise again.

Slide the serpentine belt back under the pulley and release the pulley. Remove the breaker bar and socket from the pulley.

Crank the Honda CR-V and watch the serpentine belt as it travels under the pulley just to ensure that the belt is going to stay centred under the pulley. Turn the engine off and close the bonnet.


If the serpentine belt comes off the other accessory pulleys, use the serpentine belt routing diagram to re-route the belt. The diagram is located on the top of the fan shroud.


Keep hands and fingers away from moving pulleys with the engine running.
