There are many ways to label a CD or DVD. You can write directly on the disc with special markers if you are labelling your own personal discs and don't mind an unprofessional appearance. There are also special disc drives that print directly on the disc, but they are rather expensive. One easy way to create a professional-looking CD or DVD is to print on self-adhesive labels using your home printer. If you want the label to cover the entire disc, including the clear middle section, you can use an empty CD spindle to properly align the label. Or, you can purchase a CD labelling system—known as a CD stomper—if you want the clear middle section exposed.

Instructions

  1. 1

Remove the individual label from the label sheet using the tabs. The label itself will be sticky, while the tabs still have the protective paper on them so they won't stick to your fingers.

  2. 2

Place the label upside down on the CD stomper, so that the adhesive side is facing up. Position the label to where the tabs fit in their designated spots. These tabs make sure the label stays perfectly in place, so it is important that they are snug inside the two slots.

  3. 3

Place the disc on the spindle upside down so that the top of the disc is in contact with the label's adhesive and the data side is facing up.

  4. 4

Press down on the spindle carefully three or four times. Remove the disc, tear off the tabs, and smooth the label down to get any wrinkles or bubbles out. There probably won't be any wrinkles or bubbles because the CD stomper typically eliminates them, but smoothing the label down also helps it to adhere properly.

  1. 1

Peel the individual label off of the label sheet carefully.

  2. 2

Place the label upside down on the empty CD spindle so that the adhesive is facing up.

  3. 3

Place the disc upside down on the spindle, so that the top of the disc is in contact with the label's adhesive.

  4. 4

Place your index finger in the middle of the disc and press down gently. Make sure that your finger is touching only the clear middle portion of the disc and not the part where the data is written.

  5. 5

Remove the disc from the spindle and smooth out any wrinkles or bubbles.

Tips and warnings

  • To prevent smearing, allow the ink to dry completely before placing the label on the disc.
  • Wash your hands before handling the label.
  • CD stompers use special labels that have tabs on them. You can purchase the CD stomper labelling system and the special labels at most office-supply stores.
