Create an elegant silk pillow that features a favourite photo with the use of a computer and inkjet printer. Silk is a luxurious fabric that absorbs colour well, making it a natural for this method of printing photographs on fabric often used by quilt makers. Photographs printed on silk can also be used as flags or banners commemorating a special occasion or the birth of a child. Keep the images uncomplicated and the background simple to make your photographs stand out.

Instructions

  1. 1

Wash the silk fabric with the shampoo. Rinse, dry and iron the silk.

  2. 2

Using the iron, press the silk onto the waxy side of a 9.5-by-12-inch piece of freezer paper.

  3. 3

Cut the silk/paper to 8.5 by 11 inches. Make sure no loose silk threads are hanging, or they will jam the printer.

  4. 4

Download your digital photograph into your computer’s photo program.

  5. 5

Size the photo in the photo program or drag the image into a word processing program and size it to fit the page.

  6. 6

Place the silk/paper combination into the printer and print the photo on the silk side. Let the ink dry thoroughly and heat set it by ironing for two minutes with a piece of paper covering the image.
