Madonna the pop star is known for the many costumes she wears to create incarnations of different personae during her concerts, and many people enjoy dressing up as the singer for costume parties. Some of Madonna's more recent costumes would be rather risque to wear in a public setting, but luckily most people associate the star with her earlier wardrobe, which is easy to recreate. No matter the occasion, a Madonna costume is an entertaining choice that most Americans can relate to. Get this star's early look by simply rummaging through your closet or local thrift store.

  1. 1

Crop a regular T-shirt down to a size that will expose your midriff. Use scissors to cut the bottom of the shirt off so that it rests between your belly button and the bottom of your bra. Tear the shirt in a few places with your scissors, positioning them so they do not expose any views of your undergarments you are uncomfortable showing.

  2. 2

Put on Capri-length leggings. Make a tutu-style skirt by wrapping tulle around a thin belt. Center the tulle vertically over the belt strap. Knot the tulle in place, leaving the two long ends hanging. Attach more strips until the belt is full of tulle. Cut the tulle to a length of 2 feet, and cut the skirt into dozens of strips. Trim the tutu with scissors so it is fluffy. Wrap the oversized belt around your waist, over the thin belt and waist of the tutu.

  3. 3

Add rhinestones to a jean jacket, positioning them along the shoulders and back. With scissors, cut a few holes in the jacket's arms. Pull at the holes gently to make the tears more noticeable. Put the jacket on over the T-shirt you altered in Step 1.

  4. 4

Crimp your hair or tease it so that is full and big. Use lots of hairspray to help it stand out. Wrap a piece of tulle around your head like a headband. Tie it in a bow and turn it so the bow rests over one side of your face.

  5. 5

Apply a large amount of black eyeliner around your eyes and use the liner to make a mock-Madonna mole on your face. Wear red lipstick.

  6. 6

Cut the fingers off mesh gloves so they cover just the palms of your hands.

  7. 7

Wear lacy white socks and black combat boots to complete the look.

Tips and warnings

  • Familiarise yourself with Madonna's 1980s song lyrics, if necessary, so you can sing them at the party, adding to the costume's effect.
