Disney animated films frequently invent an Abbott and Costello-like duo to move the plot along smoothly and provide comic relief. In "Cinderella," the slender, clever mouse Jaq is the "Abbott" to portly Gus Gus's "Costello." Though a bit dim-witted, Gus Gus is a brave and well-intentioned mouse, and played an important role in helping Cinderella reunite with Prince Charming after the ball. With a few ordinary clothing pieces, you can make a quick Gus Gus costume for Halloween or a school play.
Make a pair of mouse ears by cutting two circles out of brown felt, ideally the same colour brown as the rest of your costume. Cut a slit from the edge of each circle to the centre, and fold the sides over to make concave ear shapes. Sew the sides in place to hold the shape. Cut two smaller circles out of pink felt and glue them on the concave sides of the brown ears.
Sew the ears on the dark green knit cap so the concave sides face forward.
Stuff a brown tube sock with cotton to make a tail. Sew or safety pin the tail to the rear of the footsie pyjamas or sweatpants.
Put on the pair of brown footsie pyjamas or brown sweatpants and a brown sweatshirt. If your figure is slimmer than Gus Gus's, stuff the belly of your shirt or pyjamas with a pillow or rolled up clothes to make a big pot belly.
Put on a tight yellow shirt. Gus Gus's shirt rode up on him, exposing his belly. If necessary, cut the hemline of the shirt or sew a new hem to make your shirt ride up.
Put on reddish brown, pointy-toed slippers or socks.
Put on the cap with the mouse ears.
Paint a black nose and whiskers with black face paint and a make-up brush to complete the look.
