How to Make a Heart Frame in Photoshop
Turn a regular photo into a love-framed picture with Photoshop. (Heart image by Blue Frog from

To add a special romantic touch to a photo of you and a loved one, consider creating a heart frame out of your picture. Instead of destroying an actual photo by cutting into a heart shape, you can add a heart-shaped frame directly onto your digital image using Photoshop, the graphics software program available from the Adobe Creative Suite. It offers tools and design options to help you create heart frames within minutes. You'll have a quick way to add a bit of love to your pictures in just a couple of mouse clicks.

Moderately Challenging

Things you need

  1. 1

Open Photoshop, pull down the "file" menu and click "open." Browse to a photo on your computer to add a heart frame to and double-click the file name; the picture will open in the Photoshop workspace.

  2. 2

Click the "new layer" icon, which looks like a bent sticky note, on the "layers" palette on the right side of the screen. If you don't see the "layers" palette, pull down the "window" menu and click "show layers."

  3. 3

Right-click the "shape" tool on the "tools" palette on the left side of the screen. This may look like a hollow rectangle, hollow circle, line or solid star. All of these shapes share the same icon space on the toolbar until you select one. From the menu, select the "custom shape tool" option.

  4. 4

Pull down the "shape" menu at the top of the screen and click the heart.

  5. 5

Double-click the top left square of the "colour picker," which is the two overlapping coloured boxes on the "tools" palette. Select a colour for the heart frame, such as red or pink and click "OK."

  6. 6

Position your cursor near the top left corner of the photo and drag your cursor down and to the right; a heart shape will form and fill in solid on the screen over top of your photo.

  7. 7

Right-click the "eraser" tool on the "tools" palette and select the "background eraser tool" option, which looks like an eraser with a little pair of scissors over it. Pull down the "brush" menu at the top of the screen and select the largest brush option available, such as #300.

  8. 8

Erase the inside of heart, leaving a frame. Your picture will begin to appear framed inside the heart. Erase until as much of the picture is framed inside the heart as you prefer.

  9. 9

Right-click the "background" layer on the "layers" palette and select "delete layer." Click "yes" at the warning window and the background layer will disappear, leaving just the heart frame with your photo inside.
