Ideas for Organizing a Tack Room
Well-organised tack rooms keep equipment clean and usable for a long time. (horse image by Henryk Olszewski from Fotolia.com)

A tack room is part of a stable, barn or horse trailer that stores horse maintenance and care products, such as saddles, bridles, halters, blankets, brushes and other common items. Horse maintenance and care articles are quite costly and are often made of fragile materials such as leather, so it is vital that tack rooms be clean, neat and organised to elongate the life of these products.

Keep Out Rodents and Pests

Rodents and pests can be especially devastating to leather saddles and saddle pads and blankets that can be eaten through. Saddles, saddle pads, blankets and other materials that can be chewed on, burrowed through or scratched should be stored off the ground, preferably on saddle and blanket holders that can easily be affixed to the walls with a few nails or screws. Keeping these materials off the floor is vital; they will be much more difficult for rodents to access hanging in a high place. Secure all edible items, such as feed or horse snacks, in airtight resealable containers. Large dustbins with lids work well for this purpose.

Make Things Easy to Find and Access

Often, the preponderance of brushes, cleaning supplies, bridles, halters and other materials make it difficult to find what is needed immediately. Hanging halters and bridles from the wall by a nail or a bridle/halter hanger is a simple and cheap way to separate the two. Using paper and tape, you can label which equipment "belongs" to which horse, if there is more than one. Organising grooming supplies such as brushes and soaps is also possible with cheap and easy-to-find shower carriers available at most department and superstores. These can be placed on a shelf or ledge, off the ground and away from potential pests. Store items that are not used often in small plastic packing boxes, and label the outside of the boxes with the contents of the supplies.

Portability

The functionality and portability of tack is also important, especially if the horse is often transported for showing or other purposes. Tack trucks keep the tack dry, clean and secure, and are easy to transport. Tack trunks are like any other boot, but with compartments for the saddle, saddle pad, bridle and other necessary accoutrements. Tack trunks can also store these materials within a tack room, thus keeping the tack organised and secure from dust, dirt and pests.
