How to clean melamine cabinets

Updated February 21, 2017

Melamine is a hard plastic bonded to pieces of plywood to make cabinets and furniture. Melamine cabinets are a durable and inexpensive option for your kitchen. Cabinets with a melamine finish come in solid colours as well as faux wood and are also very simple to clean. You don't need any special cleansers or detergents to keep your melamine cabinets clean. In fact, using an abrasive cleanser on your melamine cabinets will scratch the finish.

Mix a mild detergent, like dish soap, with warm water.

Soak a sponge or cloth in the soapy solution and squeeze out the excess.

Wipe the cabinets.

Rinse the sponge or cloth with clean water and squeeze out the excess water.

Wipe the cabinets with the clean sponge or cloth.

Dry the cabinets with a paper towel or a dry sponge.

Tip

Most household cleaners are safe to use on melamine. Test an inconspicuous area first, like the inside of the cabinet, to ensure the cleaner won't damage the finish.
