Martial arts enthusiasts enjoy training with weapons such as swords, knives, daggers and nunchucks. However, for beginner martial arts enthusiasts, training with the actual weapons can be dangerous. Using training knives made of wood, rather than actual knives, is a safe alternative. Making your own training knives is also an entertaining craft project.
- Skill level:
Things you need
- 10-by-2-by-¼-inch plywood
- Power saw
- Hand saw
- Rough sandpaper
- Light-grain sandpaper
- Black, electrical tape
- Wood stain
Take a piece of plywood which is about 10 inches in length, 2 inches in width and ¼ inch in thickness.
Draw the shape of the knife you wish to make onto this piece of plywood using a pencil. Stay as close to the edges of the plywood as you can for less cutting.
Use a power saw (if available) or hand saw to cut away the excess plywood from your drawing. Get as close as you can to the pencil lines, but not necessarily all the way to them.
Use a rough piece of sandpaper to round the edges of the knife's handle and slightly sharpen the faux blade.
Use a light-grain sandpaper to smooth the entire knife.
Wrap black, electrical tape along the entire length of the knife's handle to make it easier to grip. Make the electrical tape grip as wide as you would like.
Use wood stain or paint to finish the blade of the knife.
