A homemade police officer hat can be part of a police officer costume for Halloween or just an interesting fashion statement. Just remember that the hat needs to be obviously fake, because posing as a police officer if you are not one is illegal.

Skill level:

Things you need

  • Police emblem
  • Hot glue gun

  1. 1

Purchase a "peaked cap," preferably black or navy blue. Peaked hats are worn today by officers, military men and women, and civilians working in aviation. For a more classic look, purchase a "bowler hat," the typical hat worn in the 1920s by officers, government officials, and, most famously, detectives.

  2. 2

Embroider a police officer emblem or purchase a plastic one from a costume shop. If embroidering the emblem for the hat, design an emblem that is clearly distinguished from an official emblem in your area. As templates for your design, use the images of officer costumes at BuyCostumes.com, HalloweenCostumes.com and Disguize.com.

  3. 3

Use the hot glue gun to glue the back of the emblem to the front of the hat. If you prefer a slightly different look, consider placing the emblem on the side of the hat. Press the emblem against the hat for 2-3 minutes, making sure to keep the hot glue off your skin.

Tips and warnings

  • For a twist on the look, ditch the emblem completely, instead using either paint or a label to print the words "police," "officer," "the law," or some other related phrase on any place on the hat you choose.
