How to Make a Solar Light Fence Post

Updated February 21, 2017

Solar lights are a great way to light up your landscaping and conserve energy. Although solar lights are usually more expensive in upfront costs compared to electric, you'll end up saving money in the long run. One way to spruce up fence posts is to attach solar lights to your existing fence posts. Solar lights are easy to install and energy efficient, making solar light fence posts a great option to light up your space.

Purchase a solar light fence post cap from your local hardware store or online. Solar fence caps come in a variety of sizes and styles.

Choose a fence post that receives at least six hours of sunlight each day. Before installing the solar light fence post cap, place it on or near the post for a few days and see how much it lights up each night. This tests the amount of sunlight it will receive.

Place the solar light fence post cap on top of the post and mark each area where you need to drill holes for installation.

Drill holes on your fence post to mount the solar light fence post cap. Make sure to use the recommended drill bit size depending on the solar cap you purchase. Don't drill too deep or you could drill through the other side of the post.

Insert the screws through the solar light fence post cap and srcew them into the predrilled holes in the fence post. The cap will light up at night once the solar light is fully charged.

Purchase the right cap depending on the type of fence post you have. There are different solar light fence post caps for vinyl, wood and plastic fences.
