Men's sport jackets come in slightly more complicated sizes than small, medium or large. A sport jacket needs to fit well in order to flatter the man who wears it, so the best bet when buying a men's sport jacket is knowing how to size one properly. Wear a sport jacket with anything from jeans to slacks for a casual or dressy look.

Measure the overarm section of your body. Stand straight with your arms relaxed down at your sides. Have a partner measure the broadest part of your shoulders, over your arms. The measuring tape should lie flat against your body and be parallel to the floor. Subtract seven inches from this measurement and round up to the nearest inch; call this measurement A.
Measure your chest. Hold your arms out to your sides and have your partner measure around the widest or broadest part of your chest. Round up to the nearest inch; call this measurement B.
Measure your height, to the nearest inch. Call this measurement C.
Compare measurements A and B. If they are nearly the same, use B to size your sport jacket. If A is much larger, use A. Sport coats have a number and a letter for the sizes; the number should match measurement A or B, depending on which measurement you will use. For instance, if your measurement A is 40 inches, your sport jacket should be a size 40 S, R or L (Short, Regular or Long).
Use your height to guide the letter size of your jacket. For heights between 5'5" and 5'7", purchase a sport jacket in a size S. For heights between 5'8" and 5'10", purchase an R. For 5'11" to 6'2", purchase an L.
Try on the jacket and adjust as needed. If it is too tight or too loose, go up or down a numbered size. If it is too long, go down a lettered size; too short, go up a lettered size. The jacket should just cover your rear but not be any longer than that, so even if you are a short person, if you have a long torso you may need a Regular or Long sport jacket.
