If you live in a region that seldom experiences frost, or only gets light winter frost, you do not need to be concerned about your geraniums outside over the winter. But for gardeners that live where there are cold winters and freezing temperatures, unless you want to go to the expense of purchasing new geranium plants every spring, storing your plants overwinter is easy and cost effective.

Use a shovel to carefully dig up your entire geranium plant from the garden. This should be done in the fall, before the first frost.
Shake all the soil from the roots.
Place the soil free geranium into a paper bag. Do not seal or close the bag, your stored geranium plant needs the air circulation during the dormant storage.
Place the paper-bagged geranium plant in a cool, dark location, like an unheated basement or garage. The temperature, ideally, should be 7.22 to 10 degrees Celsius. Warmer locations are not desirable for successful winter dormant storage of geraniums.
Remove the geranium plant from the paper bag every 6 to 8 weeks and soak the roots in a container of water for one to two hours. Check the stems and branches of the geranium for firmness. If a stem feels soft, remove it from the plant, as it probably will eventually die. Then, return the geranium into the paper bag.
Plant the dormant geranium plant in a pot of soil in March. Water the potted, dormant geranium thoroughly, then place the pot in a sunny location inside your home, or outside if the threat of frost has passed. Trim any dead or damaged branches from the plant. Be patient, it may take several weeks for your dormant geranium to begin to grow.
Tips and warnings
- As an alternative to placing the geraniums in paper bags, you can hang the plants upside down from rafters or pipes in a dark, cool location. You will still need to periodically take the plants down and soak the roots for one to two hours, two to three times during the winter.
