How to Connect a Wire Lighting Transformer

A low voltage wire lighting system uses two wires stretched in parallel across a ceiling to give optional locations for various high-intensity lamps along the stretch. The wires serve two purposes: to support the lights and to carry the electricity to power them. Since the system operates at low voltage, you need a transformer to change your household voltage to the level required by the lighting system. Make connections to the wires with special “wire feed-ins” available from the system manufacturer.

  • Power lead (provided by the transformer manufacturer)

    Remove the pointed tapping screws from the two wire feed-ins with the screwdriver. Removing the tapping screws opens the slot that you will put over the wire.

    Slip the feed-ins over the wire at the end nearest where you will put the transformer.

    Insert the pointed tapping screws back into the feed-ins and tighten them with the screwdriver until the points pierce the insulation and touch the centre conductor of the wire.

    Loosen the set screws in the opposite ends of the feed-ins.

    Insert the two ends of the power lead into the two holes on the feed-ins and tighten the set screws with the screwdriver.

    Connect the opposite end of the power lead to the transformer. Loosen the screws' terminals on the transformer and slip the ends of the power lead under them. Tighten the screws with the screwdriver.

    Plug the transformer into a wall socket. All the lights on the wire system should come on.

Tips and warnings

  • The power lead should come with your system. If not, use standard two conductor wire. You can use an extension cord by cutting the connectors off the end and stripping them back about 1/2 inch with a knife.
  • Your transformer comes with a plug and wire attached.
  • Make sure your tapping screws penetrate the insulation on the wire system enough to contact the conductors. If the tapping screws don’t make a good connection, the system won’t light up.
