Laser printers like the HP LaserJet 5P can produce excellent quality content at an affordable price, but only if those printers and consumables are maintained properly. A properly maintained 5P can provide many years of trouble-free service, but failing to maintain the printer properly can shorten its useful life. Making sure the toner cartridge is clean and free of leaks is a big part of that maintenance, since a leaking or otherwise faulty toner cartridge could cause serious damage to the printer.

  1. 1

Turn off the Laser Jet 5P printer and remove the power cord. Allow the printer to cool for a few minutes.

  2. 2

Open the top of the printer and carefully lift out the toner cartridge. Set down some scrap paper on a desk and set the cartridge on top of the paper.

  3. 3

Examine the inside of the printer for any accumulated toner. It is normal for some toner to be inside the printer, but an excessive amount could indicate that the toner cartridge is leaking.

  4. 4

Use a small handheld vacuum cleaner to remove any accumulated paper dust and toner from inside the printer. A small vacuum like the kind used to clean computers and keyboards works very well.

  5. 5

Pick up the toner cartridge and look at the paper underneath. If you see a lot of toner on the paper the cartridge has a leak and should be replaced. Placing a leaking cartridge into the printer could cause serious damage.

  6. 6

Turn over the toner cartridge if it is free of leaks. Wipe off the bottom of the toner cartridge with a paper towel to remove any accumulated dust or toner. Continue wiping off the bottom of the toner until there is no more dirt or toner.

  7. 7

Replace the cleaned toner cartridge into the printer. Close the lid, attach the power cord and turn the printer back on.
