Dust mites are microscopic insects that feed on human skin cells and are a common household allergen. Your bedding, upholstered furniture and carpeting provide the ideal environments for dust mites to thrive and cause allergic symptoms such as sneezing, itchy, nasal stuffiness, itchy eyes, eczema and asthma. Eucalyptus oil, an extract from the eucalyptus tree in Australia, has been found to effectively kill dust mites. Researchers at the University of Sydney discovered that washing blankets containing dust mites with eucalyptus oil got rid of 99 per cent of the infestation.

  1. 1

Purchase pure eucalyptus oil at a reputable health food store or aromatherapy shop that specialises in essential oils.

  2. 2

Place your blankets, sheets, pillowcases or other bedding infested with dust mites in a washing machine. Add 25 drops of eucalyptus oil to each load of laundry, along with your regular amount of laundry soap. You can also add 1 tbsp of eucalyptus oil directly to a bottle of liquid washing powder. Run the washing machine full cycle to kill the dust mites.

  3. 3

Add 10 to 15 drops of eucalyptus oil and one or two squirts of natural liquid soap to a half-gallon of water. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle. Spray on areas infested with dust mites, such as beds, dressers, couches, upholstery, curtains and carpeting.

  4. 4

Put one or two drops of eucalyptus oil directly onto a damp, clean cloth or sponge and wipe down all the surfaces infested with dust mites.

Tips and warnings

  • Eucalyptus oil can leave an odour in your washed bedding that may last two to three days.
