Vector Clipart Does Not Pixelate (abstract pattern image by Sean Gladwell from Fotolia.com)

An image can set off text or graphics perfectly. Although you can use your own images or photos, there are thousands of free pieces of clip art on the Internet and included with software. However, many clip art files are vector based. Vector files are line drawings that do not degrade or pixelate when the clip art is increased or decreased in size, like raster files. Vector graphics are a wonderful alternative to raster graphics, but many programs cannot use them. So the files must be converted to raster graphics.

Vector clip art is usually saved as an encapsulated postscript (EPS) file. However, the clip art may be saved as an Adobe Illustrator (AI) file. You can easily convert the vector clip art in Adobe Illustrator by selecting "Save for Web" or "Save a Copy" under the "File" menu. The clip art can be saved in many formats, including JPG, GIF and PNG.

Adobe Illustrator is an excellent program, but it is expensive. There are a number of other free options online.

Inkscape is an open-source illustration program that is available to download. It is very similar to Adobe Illustrator, but it is free to use. Inkscape's website can be found in References, and it is available for Windows, Mac and Linux computers.

Like Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape will convert the vector clip art by exporting a raster graphic or bitmap from the vector clip art.

There are many online vector converters. These sites require you to upload the vector clip art to convert to JPG, GIF, PNG and other file formats.
