How to Solve a Wood & Rope Puzzle
Block and rope puzzles are constructed like pulleys (horizontal pulley image by Xavier MARCHANT from Fotolia.com)

Wood and rope brainteasers challenge you to move or remove a block or cube that appears to be tied to a larger piece of wood using rope. These puzzles are solved by threading the rope through a series of holes in order.

Instructions

  1. 1

Examine the puzzle. See if you can trace the path of the rope with your finger or eyes.

  2. 2

Find the lowest hole. Pull the rope up through this hole so that the smaller block leans against the larger one.

  3. 3

A loop of rope should now be hanging down from the back of the puzzle. Find the highest hole and poke it through so that it hangs from the front of the puzzle instead. In some puzzles, you may have to push a block, bead, or sphere through the loop in order to be able to complete this step.

  4. 4

Examine the block you are trying to free. If it can be pushed through the loop without tangling the rope, do so. This will usually free the object.

  5. 5

Repeat these steps for any other objects that need to be freed.

Tips and warnings

  • Be careful of twisting the rope.
  • Never force a piece of rope or an object.
