The D-ring is a multipurpose piece of hardware used to hang items such as pictures or artwork. A piece of metal is shaped with one curved end connected to a flat end. This hanger is attached using screws. When connected, you can run a wire or piece of rope through the curved end to hang your item. D-rings are a sturdy hanging option, so get high quality hardware so the metal hooks won't bend.

  1. 1

Lay down the item you wish to hang so you are looking at the backside. Make a mark on one side of the item frame where you want to attach the D-ring, then use a tape measure line up the mark on the other side. That makes sure both marks are at equal height. The location of the mark depends on your personal preference, but most aim for about one-quarter of the length of the item down from the top.

  2. 2

Pre-drill the two marks using a drill bit. Pre-drilling keeps the wood from cracking when trying to drill in a screw.

  3. 3

Lay your D-rings down on the pre-drilled hole with the rings aimed towards each other, then drill in the screw. The screw will now hold the D-ring to the frame.

  4. 4

Thread wire or rope through one D-ring hole, then use a knot to keep it in place. Repeat this step on the other side and cut off any excess. Be sure to give enough slack in the wire to allow for some flexibility when hanging the wire to the wall hooks. You can also skip the wire and hang the D-rings themselves to the wall hooks.
